The Insights

Jira is the undisputed #1 — but not for everyone

Jira scores a perfect 100, yet its mention rate is only 83%. That's because AI models are context-aware: they recommend Jira strongly for engineering and software teams, but skip it for creative or small teams. When Jira gets mentioned, it gets recommended hard. That selectivity actually boosts its score.

Monday.com is closing the gap fast

Monday.com at 99 is just one point behind Jira. AI models position Monday.com as the versatile, visual alternative — great for non-technical teams. Their aggressive content marketing and broad use-case positioning have clearly influenced how AI models categorize them.

Notion: highest mention rate, mid-tier score

Notion and Linear both have 92% mention rates — the highest in the category. But Notion scores 83 and Linear scores 80. Why? AI models mention both frequently but often as part of a list rather than a decisive recommendation. "You could use Notion, or Asana, or Monday" is a common AI response pattern.

Linear: the developer favorite AI models love to mention

Linear at #7 is impressive for a tool that's much newer than its competitors. AI models consistently recommend Linear for engineering teams who want speed and simplicity. Its strong developer community presence on Twitter/X and Hacker News has clearly shaped AI training data.

The Basecamp effect

Basecamp scores 87 with a 90% mention rate. Despite being a smaller company, Basecamp's opinionated approach to project management — and the vocal online presence of its founders — has given it outsized AI visibility. Strong opinions create strong training data signals.

ClickUp's visibility gap

ClickUp scores 78 despite heavy marketing spend. AI models mention it (85% rate) but often with caveats about complexity and learning curve. This is a case where user sentiment in reviews and forums directly impacts AI recommendations.

What Determines PM Tool Rankings in AI?

  1. Category ownership — Jira owns "engineering PM," Monday.com owns "visual PM," Trello owns "simple kanban"
  2. User sentiment in training data — Reddit threads, G2 reviews, and blog posts shape AI opinions
  3. Documentation depth — Tools with extensive help docs get described more accurately by AI
