"What's the best platform to start an online store?" is one of the most common questions people ask AI assistants. We tracked how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity answer it — across 160 e-commerce brands in the Ataiva AI Brand Index.

The results might surprise you. The most expensive platform isn't the most recommended. And the market leader isn't #1.

The Surprising Findings

Stripe tops the e-commerce category with a perfect 100

Stripe isn't a storefront platform — it's payments infrastructure. But AI models categorize it as e-commerce and recommend it in nearly every conversation about online selling. With a 99% mention rate and perfect score, Stripe's developer-first documentation and API-centric approach have made it the default answer for "how do I accept payments online."

Wix has a 100% mention rate but ranks 8th

Every single time we prompted AI models about website builders and e-commerce, Wix came up. But its overall score of 86 tells a different story — AI models mention Wix but often position it as the "easy but limited" option, which affects sentiment scores.

WooCommerce: the open-source underdog

WooCommerce powers 36% of all online stores, but AI models score it at just 79. The reason? AI assistants frequently caveat WooCommerce recommendations with warnings about hosting complexity, plugin management, and security responsibility. High mention rate (95%), but mixed sentiment.

Etsy outperforms eBay

Etsy scores 93 vs eBay's 89. AI models consistently recommend Etsy for handmade, vintage, and creative products with positive sentiment. eBay gets mentioned in broader contexts but with more neutral language.

What This Means for E-commerce Brands

The gap between mention rate and AI score reveals something important: being mentioned isn't enough. How AI models talk about your brand matters just as much as whether they mention you at all.

Brands that score highest share these traits:

  • Clear positioning — Stripe owns "payments," Shopify owns "start a store," Etsy owns "handmade marketplace"
  • Developer content — Stripe and Shopify both have extensive API docs that AI models reference
  • Positive community sentiment — Reddit, forums, and review sites shape how AI talks about you
