Lorem Ipsum Generator
Generate placeholder text. Classic Lorem Ipsum, hipster, corporate, and dev variants. Words, sentences, paragraphs, lists. Free, in-browser.
What this does
Generates placeholder text in four flavors. Pick one, set the count, and copy the output for your design mockups, content layouts, or empty-state previews.
The four variants
Classic Lorem Ipsum. The garbled-Latin standard since the 1500s. Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum mangled into nonsense to focus the reader on layout instead of meaning. Use this when you want the most-recognized “this is placeholder” signal.
Hipster. Single-origin, artisanal, farm-to-table vocabulary. Use when designing for craft food, lifestyle, or wellness brands — the word texture matches the audience the design is targeting, even though the meaning is nonsense.
Corporate. Synergize, leverage, scale. Use for B2B SaaS dashboards and pitch decks where stakeholder-speak is the visual rhythm you’re testing for.
Dev. function, async, await, closure. Use when designing API documentation, code editor UI, or developer-tool interfaces and you want word lengths that match real code prose.
Why placeholder text exists at all
When you’re designing a layout, real copy is a distraction. The eye reads the words and judges the content, not the typography or hierarchy. Lorem ipsum is unreadable enough that you stop reading and start seeing — the white space, the line lengths, the rhythm of headings and paragraphs.
The first known use of lorem ipsum is from the 1500s — a printer scrambled Cicero’s text to fill out a type specimen. The phrase “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” is from a real Latin sentence: “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…” with parts removed. It’s not just gibberish — it’s deliberately corrupted, recognizable Latin.
When to NOT use placeholder text
- Final-stage UX review. By the time you’re testing actual user flow, real copy matters. Lorem ipsum hides whether your microcopy actually fits.
- Accessibility audits. Screen readers read it as Latin, badly. Use real text or empty state copy.
- Stakeholder demos. Non-designers see “lorem ipsum” and assume the design is unfinished, even if the layout is final. Better to use realistic-sounding stub copy in the brand’s voice.
- Production pages with a fallback. If a CMS field is empty, don’t fall back to lorem ipsum — it’ll inevitably end up in production. Use real fallback copy or simply hide the section.
Length cheatsheet
Common placeholder needs:
| Slot | Approximate count |
|---|---|
| Page title | 1 sentence (~5–10 words) |
| Card description | 1–2 sentences |
| Body paragraph | 1 paragraph (~3–6 sentences) |
| Article body | 4–8 paragraphs |
| Bullet list | 3–7 list items |
| Tooltip | 1 short sentence (~5–8 words) |
| Hero subtitle | 1–2 sentences |
What this is NOT
- Not a multilingual generator. No CJK, Cyrillic, or Arabic placeholder. For those, use a script-specific generator.
- Not a real content generator. Don’t ship lorem ipsum to production accidentally — search engines treat it as low-quality content if indexed.
